Stud Breeding Software in South Africa: A 2026 Field Guide

A straight-talking overview for farmers deciding what to run in 2026

If you're a stud breeder in South Africa and you're looking at your options for managing your herd or flock digitally, the landscape can be confusing. There are a handful of software options available, most of them have been around for years, and there's surprisingly little public information comparing them side-by-side.

This guide is an honest, factual overview of what's available in 2026. We'll cover the platforms, what they do well, how they're priced, and who they're best suited to. Yes, MyStudStats is one of them — we built it — but we'll try to be as fair as possible. The goal is to help you pick the right tool for your operation, not to sell you on ours.

Disclosure

Everything below is based on publicly available information (vendor websites, product pages, and the SA Stud Book / Logix documentation) and our own experience building MyStudStats. If we get something wrong, email us at info@mystudstats.co.za and we'll correct it. We have no commercial relationship with any of the other platforms mentioned.

The big picture: two ecosystems

There are really two layers to this.

Layer 1: SA Stud Book and Logix. SA Stud Book has been the backbone of South African pedigree recording since 1905. It handles the vast majority of the country's registered breed societies and runs the Logix platform for genetic evaluation — BLUP breeding values, genomic predictions, parentage verification. If you want official pedigree certificates, EBVs, or society registration for your animals, you're dealing with SA Stud Book either directly or through your breed society.

Logix is the authority for genetic evaluation in SA and does it extremely well. But Logix is a specialist genetic evaluation platform. It's not designed to be your day-to-day farm management app. You don't use Logix to log a treatment, track feed costs, or send an invoice to a buyer.

Layer 2: farm management software. This is the layer that sits on top. It handles everything SA Stud Book doesn't: health records, feed management, sales, financials, day-to-day admin. Some platforms in this layer integrate with Logix to submit data upstream and pull breeding values back. Some don't.

When people ask "what software should I use for my stud?", they're almost always asking about Layer 2. That's what this guide is about.

The options in 2026

BenguFarm

  • Developer: BenguelaSoft, based in Pretoria
  • Platform: Windows desktop software
  • Mobile: Separate Android and iOS apps available at extra cost
  • Logix integration: Deep — arguably the most complete Logix integration of any third-party platform
  • Scale / RFID support: Supports Tru-Test and Agrident RFID readers and scale heads
  • Pricing: Per-module, with an annual maintenance fee. Mobile add-ons priced separately. Exact figures change over time — check their website for current pricing

BenguFarm is the most established commercial option for SA stud breeders and has the deepest Logix integration of any third-party platform we're aware of. If you're heavily committed to SA Stud Book, run Tru-Test hardware, and you're comfortable with a Windows desktop workflow, it's a serious contender. It's been trusted by commercial operations for years.

The main question to ask yourself is whether a desktop-first workflow fits how you actually work day-to-day. If you spend most of your time in the kraal or veld, a Windows program that lives on your farm office PC and a separate mobile app may or may not be the right fit. That's a personal judgement call.

Studmaster

  • Developer: South African
  • Platform: Windows desktop
  • Logix integration: File-based import/export
  • Pricing: Contact vendor for current pricing

Studmaster is another long-standing SA option. It's targeted at breeders who want a focused, no-frills pedigree and record- keeping tool. If you've been using it for years and it works for you, there's no strong reason to change — but if you're starting fresh in 2026, evaluate whether the Windows-only workflow suits you.

HerdMASTER

  • Developer: ABRI (Agricultural Business Research Institute), Australia
  • SA distributor: LRF (Livestock Registering Federation)
  • Platform: Windows desktop
  • Strengths: BREEDPLAN integration for genetic evaluation (strong in Australian breed societies)
  • Pricing: Annual subscription — check LRF for current rand pricing

HerdMASTER is an Australian product sold in SA. It's strong for breeders whose societies use BREEDPLAN (some SA societies do) and who want a mature pedigree tool. Because it's not SA-built, its Logix integration is less complete than BenguFarm's, and it wasn't designed with SA compliance (POPIA, VAT Act, Animal Diseases Act) as a primary requirement.

Spreadsheets (the most common option)

Let's be honest — the most widely used "software" for stud management in South Africa is still Microsoft Excel. Every SA breeder we've spoken to starts here, and many never leave. Spreadsheets are free, universal, and work offline, which is exactly why they're so sticky.

They break down when:

  • You pass 30-50 animals and finding a specific record becomes painful
  • You need to look up a treatment's withdrawal period before a sale and can't remember which sheet you logged it in
  • You want to calculate net profit per animal and have to build the formula from scratch every time
  • Two people need to update the same data from different devices
  • You need to generate a sales certificate or invoice with your branding on it

If you're still on spreadsheets and it works, great — keep going until it doesn't. The moment you spend more than 15 minutes a week fighting the spreadsheet, it's time to look at proper software.

MyStudStats

  • Developer: South African, launched 2026
  • Platform: Web app + mobile PWA (install to home screen on any iPhone or Android)
  • Mobile: Included, same app on every device
  • Offline: Yes — works fully in the kraal, syncs when signal returns
  • Logix integration: On the roadmap (Phase 3)
  • Scale / RFID support: CSV import from Tru-Test XR5000, XRS2, and Gallagher scale heads. Native Bluetooth support planned for Phase 2d.
  • Pricing: Free up to 50 animals. Paid plans R149 / R349 / R649 / R1149 per month. 14-day free trial on every paid plan. No credit card to start.

We built MyStudStats because we wanted a modern, mobile-first platform that felt like something designed in the last five years. Cloud-based, works offline, calculates inbreeding automatically, tracks withdrawal periods, generates invoices and sale certificates, and handles financials — all from your phone. POPIA compliant, priced in rands, supports cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits, ostriches, and more.

What we don't do (yet): direct Logix submission. That's on the roadmap and we're actively working with SA Stud Book on API access. If you need official pedigree submission today, you'll still use BenguFarm or work directly with your breed society. We'll catch up on this front in 2026.

What we do exceptionally well: the farm management layer — the day-to-day stuff. Birth outcomes, health records with auto-calculated withdrawal dates, feed costs per animal per day, per-animal profitability, sales workflow with buyer management, offline sync, branded PDF invoices, and a fast mobile experience.

How to choose

There's no universal answer. The right choice depends on three things: the size of your operation, how committed you are to official Logix submission, and how you actually work day-to-day.

If you are...Consider
A hobbyist or small breeder with under 50 animalsMyStudStats free plan, or a spreadsheet if you're disciplined
A commercial breeder with 50-500 animals, some spreadsheet fatigueMyStudStats Seedling or Grower — modern, mobile, fast to set up
Deeply committed to Logix / SA Stud Book submission, today, non-negotiableBenguFarm (most complete Logix integration of the commercial tools)
Focused on BREEDPLAN (some SA beef societies)HerdMASTER via LRF
A multi-species operation (cattle + sheep + goats + rabbits)MyStudStats — built around multi-species from day one

The questions nobody asks (but should)

  • Does it work on my phone without signal? If you're in the veld or kraal half the day, this is non-negotiable. Desktop software doesn't come with you.
  • Who owns my data? Read the terms. You should own it. You should be able to export it. If the vendor disappears tomorrow, you should walk away with everything.
  • Is it POPIA compliant? Any platform holding personal information on your buyers has to comply with POPIA. Ask for a straight answer.
  • What happens when I sell? Can the platform generate a branded invoice, a sale certificate, and log the sale against the right animal automatically? How many clicks does it take?
  • What does year 3 look like? What does the total cost look like over three years, including any add-ons (mobile, integrations, maintenance)? Do the math.

Our honest take

The SA stud breeding software market has been under-served for a decade. BenguFarm is a serious commercial product with deep Logix integration — if that's your priority, it's the incumbent for good reason. Studmaster and HerdMASTER have been around for years and work for the people who run them.

But there's clearly room for a modern, mobile-first, affordable option that most farmers can start with for free. That's what we're building. We're not trying to replace SA Stud Book or Logix — we're trying to build the farmer-facing layer that makes day-to-day stud management less painful, and eventually connects cleanly to Logix for the pedigree submission side.

If you're happy with what you're using, stay put. If you're on spreadsheets and feeling the pain, or you're shopping around, we'd love you to try MyStudStats. It's free up to 50 animals, takes about 2 minutes to sign up, and you can export your data at any time if it's not for you.
